Kareena Kapoor's Maxim Photoshoot
Kareena Kapoor
We admit Kareena Kapoor is s.e.xy as hell. And that God really did do us a favour by creating her.
What do you think you’d be best known for? Beauty, brains or genes?
Bits of all three. Genes, actually.
What do you think is your best physical asset?
My eyes. I think there’s a certain quality in them. Light eyes, like we Kapoors have, are generally more expressive. I’ve always felt that.
What does it feel like to be the stuff of millions of male fantasies?
Doesn’t seem like I am, going by my boyfriend’s reaction. He’s pretty boring. Interested only in himself. Not me. Anyone you ever fancied? And did not get. Unfortunately, no. Usually I am the one breaking hearts. That’s the best way to be!
What pisses you off in a man?
Male chauvinism. Most men from the film industry are usually such diehard chauvinists. They think they are the end of the world. All of them! Women are so much superior. They have the ability to do so much more. That’s God’s own truth, actually.
What endears you most in a man?
His smile. Shahid, my boyfriend, has a great smile. Oh, and a great body always helps! I like my man to be athletic.
What do you hate in a man? Physically?
Flip-flop body, pendulum paunch are so naff. I hate overweight men.
The best date you ever had?
When Shahid booked us a whole yacht in Dubai. There was no one aboard except the two of us. A band played for us. Dinner was about candlelight and roses. And the yacht took us all around Dubai.
You are quite tomboyish? Is that a problem when dealing with people?
I’ve a mind of my own. I call a spade a spade. More likely, shovel! I’m not a hypocrite. I’d never say anything for the sake of saying it. I would speak the truth even if it hurts someone.
When did you first realise as a woman you had power over men?
When I turned 18. Most girls do. I started working. You realise how people around you find you. All men find women sensuous. That’s when I realised what it is to be a woman.
Your most embarrassing moment? In real life. On camera.
You know I’ve never been embarrassed over anything. I’m too forthright for that.
After playing Chameli, what do you think is different in a whore’s mental makeup?
Is there a different mindset? I did not study or research the part at all. I just did what I thought a prostitute would do or behave as. Turned out I wasn’t too off the mark. Critics loved it. I loved it.
Do men make better friends than women? For you?
Is it possible for men to be friends with women? Maybe. I have two or three very good male friends. Is it possible for men and women to be JUST friends? It can be tough.Depends on how much will power the woman or the man has. Depends on the situation.
Do you tell your boyfriend everything?
I tell him everything. And I mean, everything.
And you expect him to do the same?
Absolutely. He, too, is very forthright.
Is fidelity possible?
Being faithful, you mean? Why not? If you love each other, fidelity is possible. I do believe certain men have it. I have confidence in my man. It is a myth that monogamy is impossible. Many women use that as an excuse. Many men too. To justify their behaviour.
Is the past a critical factor in the present? Does it matter in a relationship?
No. The present is what should be fabulous. There should be a future. Who cares about the past. It is only to be erased.
Does your boyfriend get jealous that you’re a fantasy object for
millions of men?
No. Heroines are creatures of fantasy. What I am with him is for real.
And what is the real Kareena?
I love to read and my favourite books are Eric Segal’s Doctors, Mary Higgins Clark’s Remember Me and Judith Krantz’s Till We Meet Again. I am sentimental. I still have a spaghetti strap top my mom bought me many years ago that I don’t even fit into now. I love old Hindi songs and have heard Lagja Gale from Woh Kaun Thi a million times! I am a good cook. I took cooking classes and can cook everything from Indian to Chinese to cakes and pastries. I don’t like make up. I love belts. Enough?
Describe yourself physically, emotionally.
Physically, I’m very happy with the way I am. I thank God for everything I have. Emotionally, I am very sensitive. That can be tormenting for my man. I’m not hard and strong. Women have an emotional touch and and that is their defining quality.
How much of your off-screen persona is similar to your on-screen characters?
The fact is I’m emotionally sensitive. In Chameli, I’ve played a strongheaded whore. In Aitraz, I played a lawyer. The emotional tinge in both characters is me. Your carefree attitude is what we boys love.
Does it hurt at times?
I don’t regret being frank. And I believe people have accepted me for who I am. When I entered the profession, people didn’t know me well. The aura around me disguised the real person. But things have changed.
Today I don’t want to react to any allegations at all. I have come to realise that anybody can say anything and get away with it. I am beyond controversies. They think that I have had people backing me. There is a lobby operating against me. But that’s fine with me, there is a lobby operating against every star. I think it is fabulous. I love all the attention I get.
What’s the maddest thing Kareena Kapoor has ever done?
I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I’m a vegetarian. I’m monogamous! How much saner can I get? Once upon a time, I enjoyed wine, chicken, mutton, fish... gave it all up. That’s a first in the history of the Kapoors.
